Circuit Courts

Circuit Courts in Mississippi hear felony criminal prosecutions and civil lawsuits. The state has 22 Circuit Court districts, and Pontotoc County is in District 1. All Circuit Court judges in the state are selected in non-partisan elections for four-year terms.

As of May 16th, 2022 electronic filing through the Mississippi Electronic Courts (MEC) system has been implemented for both civil and criminal cases in Pontotoc County Circuit and County Courts.  All filing, signing, verification, and service of pleadings and papers shall be made in accordance with the Administrative Procedures set forth by MEC.  Please visit the MEC website at mec.ms.gov or call the MEC Help Desk at 601-576-4650 to register and/or for additional information.

To assist in the judicial process, the circuit clerk serves as the clerk of the Circuit Court. The office receives and files lawsuits, indictments, motions and other related papers in all civil and criminal cases filed. The clerk also issues subpoenas and keeps a record of all judgments and executions.

The clerk also:

  • Keeps a general court docket, in which all names and parties in each case, pleas, indictments and records from lower courts on appeal are entered.
  • Keeps orders of the court, which are referenced in the minutes book.
  • Enters a full and complete record of the proceedings of a suit.
